Peru Gov't reaffirms commitment to improve education

Peruvian Prime Minister Fernando Zavala on Wednesday reiterated the Executive Branch's commitment to keep working in order to improve education and benefits for teachers.

"We reaffirm our commitment to continue working for better education and for the re-appraisal of teachers, but in a united and peaceful work environment," he said in reference to opposing sectors. 

The Cabinet Chief underlined President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's administration has —since the beginning of its term in office— supported an education reform that prioritizes the role of teachers.

Such reform implies the development of the teaching career and a salary raise for educators.

In this sense, Zavala reiterated President Kuczynski's pledge that all public school teachers would earn no less than S/1,780 (about US$548) in 2017, and at least S/2,000 (about US$616) as of next year.

Likewise, the also Finance Minister noted all salary scales have seen a 15% increase this year.

"We are on the right track and we are moving forward. […] We are fulfilling our commitments," he pointed out. 

Remarks were made during a press conference following the weekly ministerial cabinet session.

Joining Zavala were Ministers Marilu Martens (Education), Jorge Nieto (Defense) and Carlos Basombrio (Interior).
