Peru's government will eradicate extreme poverty and reduce poverty to 10%, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski reaffirmed today.

The economist underlined the importance of meeting goals set by his administration towards 2021, Peru's Bicentennial year.

"We have inherited poverty rate standing at 23%. Our aim is to reduce it to 10% and to eliminate extreme poverty," he said.

The top official recalled the 54% poverty rate inherited by former President Alejandro Toledo's administration in 2001, when he served as Economy Minister.

The figures were reduced to under 40% by promoting new investments such as Callao's port and the Camisea gas pipeline, as well as social programs, he added.

Whistleblower rewards

On citizen security matters, the Head of State noted the whistleblower reward program to catch criminals is leading to good results.

Security measures also include a penitentiary reform, as well as improving precincts.

Teacher salary raise

Regarding education, Peru's statesman ratified the goal to raise teachers' salaries to at least S/2,000 (about US$606) during his first year in office.

Said amount could be further increased through the tax reform to promote SMEs formalization.

Remarks were made during an interview with Peruvian Canal N news station.
