Peruvian exports are likely to expand 18% in 2017 compared to last year, Peru's private-run Foreign Trade Society (Comex Peru) projected Tuesday.

"Exports will expand 18% in 2017 from a year earlier," guild Chairman Jose Luis Noriega said after participating in the 10th APEC 2017 SME Summit in Lima.

Said expansion will be underpinned by shipments from the mining and agricultural sectors, he indicated.

Agroindustry by 2021

According to Noriega, agriculture sector and agroindustry show signs of dynamism. In this sense, their shipments are expected to double by 2021.

Likewise, mining exports growth would become a reality due to higher mineral prices —along with greater volumes— as some large projects have already come into operation.

Additionally, Peru hosts 5.7 million micro- and small-companies, which provide jobs for 8.13 million people and account for 20.6% of the Inca country's total output.

Nonetheless, he noted 79.9% of those businesses belong to the informal sector.
