Peru has high rates of homicide and violence against women, so preventive actions and formal complaints deem necessary to address this problem, Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said on Saturday.

During his visit to Women Emergency Center (CEM) in Santiago de Surco district, Mr. Kuczynski explained the idea is to open up 50 of these public facilities throughout the year.

"Unfortunately, Peru reports consistently high rates of homicide and violence against women, and we have to change that. This [CEM] is a mechanism. There are economic, cultural and other scourges we’ve got to combat," he said.

CEMs help victims of domestic and sexual violence, providing them with support, counselling, as well as police and judicial follow-up, if necessary.

They also offer comprehensive, multidisciplinary assistance, as well as legal defense and psychological counselling to repair the damage done and provide social assistance.

Peru's top official explained additional centers may be built under the Works for Taxes mechanism, setting up 2,000 centers across the country; although he admitted this might take several years.
