Peru's general budget for fiscal year 2018 puts emphasis on reconstruction of "Coastal El Niño" affected areas, as well as on health, drinking water, sanitation, education, and public safety.

Remarks were made Wednesday by Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, via Twitter.

Peru's top official affirmed the 2018 budget is 10% higher than last year's.

He went on to say health is the sector that will benefit the most, with a 16% increase in its budget.

Mr. Kuczynski noted his Government will commit S/27.430 billion (US$8.46 billion) to education, thus accounting for 17.5% of the general budget.

The public safety portfolio, on the other hand, will reach S/4.443 billion (US$1.37 billion) in an effort to stop delinquency and organized crime.

Lastly, the 78-year-old anticipated the Government will spend S/4.292 billion (US$1.323 billion) on drinking water and sanitation works in urban and rural zones.

This way, he said, the current administration will achieve its goal of providing drinking water to all Peruvians by 2021.
