Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski believes today's First Peru-Chile Binational Cabinet and Presidential Meeting in Lima constitutes a milestone in the troubled Latin American region.

The meeting will discuss issues of bilateral interest, both countries' participation in the Pacific Alliance and the response of such integration mechanism to protectionism in some parts of the globe.

Likewise, the gathering aims to bring Tacna (Peru) and Arica (Chile) cities closer together and upgrade the train connecting them.

"That is the agenda. Activities began yesterday along with [Chilean] President Michelle Bachelet; it was quite a good meeting with private sector representatives. Today is ministers' turn. I think this is a milestone in the troubled Latin American region," he stated.

The Head of State stressed the bilateral relationship between the two countries saying Chilean investment in Peru totals US$17 billion, whereas Peru's investment in Chile reaches US$11 billion.

Mr. Kuczynski said previous binational cabinets with Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia yielded remarkable results and boosted ties with neighboring countries.

"This is quite an achievement within the last 20 or 25 years, since Peru and Ecuador signed a historic peace treaty under [Alberto] Fujimori's administration," he pointed out.
