Literature laureate Mario Vargas Llosa and professionals from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay were awarded the Don Quixote Prize and the King of Spain International Journalism Awards —in its 33rd edition.

Vargas Llosa, one of the most relevant and renowned literature and journalism writers in the Spanish scene, was awarded the Don Quixote Prize, over a recent Cusco story published by El Pais daily.

The King of Spain Awards highlighted the work of journalists from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay, which addressed the tragedy of human exploitation and poverty, as well as personal experiences.

The Jury reviewed 185 works from 18 countries in six categories.

Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, 1936) was bestowed the XII Don Quixote Journalism Award for his report “Cusco throughout the Time”, which tells his impressions of the city after several years of absence, by describing its changes and improvements.

Likewise, it examines factors such as miscegenation and the use of language by the local population.

The Don Quixote Award, sponsored by state-run Tragsa, includes a cash prize €9,000 (about US$9,765) and a commemorative sculpture.

The King of Spain International Journalism Awards are convened annually by EFE and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation.

The awards will be granted by the Spanish Royals at a ceremony in Madrid.
