The Deputy Minister of Social Benefits at Peru’s Ministry of Social Inclusion and Development (Midis), Norma Vidal, and the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Ertharin Cousin, convened for a coordination and working meeting in which Peru was set as an example of “investment in people living in poverty.”

Also attended by the WFP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Miguel Barreto, and the WFP Representative in Peru, Sheila Grudem, the gathering discussed the expectations the international organization and countries in the region have for the work carried out by the current government with regard to its policy aimed at assisting people.

“Interest is not only focused on the economic growth, but the State’s investment in people living in poverty, as well as the decision to make investments, such as those financed by Midis, through its social programs to narrow inequality gaps,” pointed out the government official.

This way, WFP officials decided to continue to foster closer working ties with Midis and expressed their intention to continue supporting technical assistance of the sector’s social programs.

Such a support will be provided with special emphasis in the National School Food Program, known as Qali Warma, which will result in experiences for the continuing improvement of the program.
