The regional government of Tumbes has chosen the motto “Tumbes, the South American Caribbean: beaches, mangroves, forests and gastronomy” as part of a strategy to transform Tumbes into one of the most important destinations of Peru.

According to a regional mandate published in the official newspaper El Peruano, the slogan shall appear in every official document issued by public, private entities from Tumbes.

Regional Director of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) Wilfredo Barrientos said the phrase is aimed at highlighting similarities between beaches in the region and those in the Caribbean —known for their tropical weather, warm waters, white sand, palm trees, and other landscape elements that domestic and foreign holidaymakers can enjoy throughout the year.

The list of attractions is not limited to the delightful beaches, but includes nearby spots that are becoming more and more popular, such as the Tumbes Mangroves National Sanctuary in Zarumilla.

This natural site covers an area of 2972 hectares and is located on the coast border with Ecuador. It is a unique place and the largest area of mangroves in Peru.

The most striking thing of this ecosystem is not only its biodiversity, but the fact that many human populations receive direct benefits from it through the extraction, trade and consumption of hydro-biologic products.

Other highlights include the dry forest of Tumbes —an ecoregion of the tropical dry forest that extends from the coast to the Andes and  to the Sechura desert in the South. It also contains a particular biodiversity.

These amazing tourist attractions are complemented with the exquisite local food —mainly marine products— that is getting more and more recognition both locally and abroad for its quality and variety.

In addition to this, visitors can enjoy whale- and giant turtle-watching tours, which are gaining popularity due to an increasing demand of eco-tourism in the world.
