Top eight settled for Women's Junior World Championship

Host Peru captured the top spot in Pool A at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship Peru 2011, as the first round of this tournament concluded Sunday with matches in Lima and Trujillo deciding the final two slots into the top eight second round pools set for July 26-28.

Italy and Belgium earned the final two spots into the top eight as Brazil, China, Dominican Republic, Peru, Slovakia and United States all guaranteed positions following Saturday’s matches.

In Pool A in Trujillo, Peru (3-0, 9 points) defeated Slovakia (2-1, 6 points) 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 in a battle of two undefeated teams.

Tunisia (1-2, 3 points) earned their first-ever win in the FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship with a 26-24, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 17-15 victory over continental rival Egypt, which was also seeking their first-ever win in the tournament.

The match also was the highest scoring affair of the tournament with 220 total points scored.

In Pool B in Lima, Italy (2-1, 6 points) blanked Serbia (1-2, 3 points) 25-14, 25-15, 25-20 in a battle of teams needing a victory to advance to the top eight second round. Meanwhile, Brazil (3-0, 9 points) remained undefeated with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Cuba (0-3, 0 points).

In Pool C at Trujillo, United States (3-0, 9 points) defeated Korea (1-2, 2 points) 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 to go undefeated in the first round.

Belgium (2-1, 6 points) claimed the group’s final spot into the top eight with a 20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-16 come-from-behind win over Poland (0-3, 1 point), which needed a win and United States win over Korea to reach the final round.

In Pool D at Lima, China (3-0, 9 points) defeated Dominican Republic (2-1, 6 points) 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 to finish atop the group without a loss. In the concluding first-round match in Lima, Russia (1-2, 3 points) won their first match of the tournament with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Japan (0-3, 0 points).
