Tobacco consumption declines moderately in Peru

18:00 | Lima, Sep. 21.

The London-based market research firm Euromonitor International released a comprehensive report finding that volume sales of cigarettes in Peru declined moderately in 2013, an scenario explained by three main factors.

Firstly, improved enforcement of the Peruvian law determined that consumers are effectively banned from smoking in public spaces.

The second factor mentioned by the market research group has to do with the fact that awareness of the negative impact of smoking is rising among casual smokers.

Thirdly, the 48-page report finds that players in this arena continue to remarkably increase prices. These three factors determined that Peruvians reduced their frequency of consuming cigarettes.

“A tighter enforcement of Peruvian legislation that bans smoking in closed public places, rising prices of cigarettes and increasing health concerns will all be factors that determine that Peruvians reduce their frequency of consuming cigarettes,” Euromonitor's team of analysts stated.

Nevertheless, an increasing legal smoking population and a growing demand for products that offer the latest technological innovation, such as capsule-flavored cigarettes that carry higher unit prices will all have a positive impact on the market in value terms.
