About 10,000 domestic and foreign tourists flocked to Colca Valley, one of the best-known tourist hubs in southern Peru, as part of the long weekend given on the occasion of Peru’s Independence Day celebrations.

Hotels in Chivay -a town at the entrance of the valley and capital of Caylloma province in Arequipa region- were jam-packed with visitors since Friday, July 25.

Besides, according to a recent article published by El Comercio daily, a similar situation was reported in the nearby towns of Coparaque, Yanque, Sibayo and Cabanaconde.

Rafael Cornejo, head of Arequipa Hotel and Restaurants Association (Ahora), projected the number of visitors would reach 10 thousand; however, Colca Autonomous Authority (Autocolca) claims that this figure has been surpassed thanks to a campaign launched to exempt locals from paying tourist tickets.

In addition, Cruz del Condor viewpoint was crowded with throngs of tourists from Sunday 27 July to Tuesday 29 July. Luckily for them, condors were gliding on the air for hours.

Furthermore, La Calera hot spring in Chivay was another heavily visited site. Its hot thermal pools were a must for those who wanted to spend a relaxing time.
