Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and Turkish Head of State Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated on Wednesday in the Peru-Turkey Business Forum organized by the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK) and Lima Chamber of Commerce.

Trade between Peru and Turkey denotes a great growth potential for the South American country; thus, bilateral relations will be oriented towards this objective in the years to come, Peru's top official affirmed.

According to the Head of State, Turkey currently imports good and services valued at US$200 billion. Peruvian exports merely account for 0.1% of that total.

"Therefore, we estimate a great potential lies ahead for us to continue increasing trade flow between both countries," he said.

During his speech, Mr. Humala said Peru-Turkey trade has almost increased fivefold over the last decade, climbing from US$56 million (2005) to US$241 million (2015).

Turkish imports account for 86% of traded volume between both nations. Thus, it generates a growth opportunity for Peruvian exports to this 79-people market.

Currently, both countries are engaged in negotiations towards reaching a Free Trade Agreement.

The activity was held within the framework of the official two-day visit paid by the Turkish Head of State, who was joined by his State Ministers and entrepreneurs.

The forum saw the presence of a 130 businesspeople from the energy, construction and textile sectors, among others.
