Peruvian President Ollanta Humala announced he has called the Council of State and a meeting with political leaders to address the alleged espionage carried out by Peruvian naval non-commissioned officers in favor of Chile.

Mr. Humala told the media the invitation to political leaders was made through the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM).

The meetings are intended to analyze and inform the political community on the case.

To this end, Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano might be invited to attend the Permanent Commission at the Peruvian Congress.

He also affirmed the necessary measures are being taken so that investigation is carried out with the utmost objectivity and impartiality.

If confirmed, Mr. Humala added, the complaint would be a "very serious" thing for the bilateral relations with Chile.

“The Peruvian population must be convinced the government is addressing the problem and, if everything turns out to be true and all this ends up in a complaint, this will be taken into consideration for the bilateral relations,” he continued.

The Peruvian leader recalled that the case is still under investigation and, as it is a sensitive issue that involves national security, it had been kept in reserve, but it was made public later.
