Chilean President Michelle Bachelet expressed her solidarity with the victims of the 5.1- magnitude earthquake that struck Paruro province in Cusco, southern Peru, and voiced the support of her government to these communities in such difficult times.

The information was provided by Peruvian President himself from Paruro province, where he arrived to personally oversee disaster assistance.

"I have received a phone call from Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who showed her solidarity and willingness to assist these communities (...) I would like to publicly thank President Bachelet for her concern about this situation in Peru," he told Canal N.

The Peruvian leader said this is another demonstration of the good bilateral relations and the concern the two South American nations have for such events. He also recalled previous times when Peru expressed support and solidarity to its southern neighbor, which has also dealt with natural disasters.

"This shows that, despite the differences in the political arena, the two neighboring countries should always maintain friendly relations," he said.

At least eight people have been killed and four others injured by the said earthquake that struck late Saturday the Peruvian southern region of Cusco.
