Peruvian capital Lima is well on the way to becoming a sporting hub that will leave a legacy for generations to come, the country’s National Olympic Committee’s (COP) has said.

The coastal Lima region, in central Peru is set to play host of the 2019 Pan American and Parapan Games, and it is bidding to host the 130th International Olympic Committee Session in 2017 - at which the winning city in the bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic will be announced.

Furthermore, Peru's political, cultural, financial and commercial center is also one of three cities in the race to host the World Games in 2021, along with Birmingham in Alabama and the Russian city Ufa.

"Our goal is to establish the ethos and standards of sport in all parts of the city, providing excellent sport facilities where the athletes can practice sports," said José Quiñones González, COP’s President.

He added, “We have held 23 sporting events in the last four years [...] We are fast becoming a sporting nation and our plan for the next five years is to hasten and speed this process up to create an early legacy for our people”.

As part of COP’s master plan to drive enthusiasm for sport in the Andean nation, Lima’s metropolitan area will play host of a number of major events in badminton, hockey and rowing in the next 18 month-period.

Likewise, the Peruvian capital is expected to host the 7th annual edition of IOC Athlete Career Programme Forum, scheduled for early 2015, according to insidethegames.biz.
