Peru’s anti-drug police eradicated nearly 75,000 marijuana plants in the country’s north-central Huanuco region, it was reported on Thursday.

With the assistance of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, National Police officers have managed to eradicate and burn over 63,000 kilograms (about 138,891 lbs) of growing marijuana plants located in the district of Huacrachuco, in Marañon province.

During the operation, Arnulfo Carhuanira Aguirre was taken into custody. The 47-year-old man was being sued for illicit drug tracking by the Huaraz's First Criminal Court.

In fact, the police found a 1/2 kilo (1.1 lb) bag of marijuana plants in Carhuanira's house.

Moreover, the police found more marijuana stashed in a rustic abandoned house. Carhuanira was later taken to the Huaraz's anti-drug bureau for further criminal investigation and prosecution.

Under Peruvian law, possession of a small amount of marijuana and some other drugs is legal, but the sale of the drug is not.

It should be noted that last January Peru’s anti-drug police eradicated some 65,000 marijuana plants in the same region.
