The Peruvian government is focused on citizens' well-being and providing children with a high-quality education, Second Vice-President Mercedes Araoz affirmed Tuesday.

While addressing reporters, the government official noted she does not understand why teachers remain on strike, regardless of the commitments assumed by the Executive Power to improve their living conditions.

As is known, strikers recently declined to sign an agreement with Peru's Education Ministry, as they refused to go through a performance assessment process.

"I do not know what they are looking for, but what I can assure is that the [government's] objective is to serve the people. We care about children being educated," Araoz expressed.

"That is why we cannot give in to teachers' opposition to the assessment [program], because we want to provide a quality education," she added.

The also congresswoman underlined the Kuczynski administration undertakes efforts for teachers to have better opportunities, as it did with doctors and nurses.

In this sense, Araoz said the Peruvian State has changed and now demands better trained professionals.
