A Stamford community event brought together a number of Peruvian expats and residents together to share in celebrations on the occasion of Peru’s Independence Day.

Stamford, home to a growing population of Peruvians in the United States, gathered its community members last Sunday on the steps of the Old Town Hall to hold the 23rd Flag raising ceremony held downtown.

It should be noted that Stamford-based Peruvian American Community Center of Connecticut (PACC) has been raising the Andean nation’s flag for 23 years to join Peruvians in the commemoration of their patriotic anniversary.

“In honor of independent of Peru which is July 28th, we raise the flag in the city of Stamford every year; it remains raised there after the 28th,” said Alex Martinez, President of the Peruvian American Community Center of Connecticut.

“It’s a way for Peruvians living in the city and surrounding areas to have some of their homeland here and to share with the community at large that those living are community, the culture that makes us the United States of America,” he added.

According to Itsrelevant.com, the event was attended by Peruvian congressman Carlos Bruce, who was invited to the city by PACC and previously greeted with an Honorary Key to the city by Mayor David Martin.

“I had a very good time, Stamford is a very nice city, and there is a very vibrant Peruvian community here,” Bruce said after he joined U.S. Congressman Jim Himes raising both the American and Peruvian flag over the city.
