Peruvian exports of non-traditional products to India rose to a record US$ 37.6 million during the first five months of the year, up 53.1 percent from the same period a year earlier, it was reported Thursday.

In its latest report, Peru’s Association of Exporters (Adex) noted the performance recorded during the January-May stretch was thanks largely to a strong surge in the production of the country’s non-metallic mining sub sector.

“The above-mentioned economic activity accounts for 118.3 percent of total exports to the Asian country compared to the same period of last year,” the entity’s study reveals.

Other factors driving the increase were the sub-sectors of agriculture and agribusiness which registered a top-line growth of 79.7 percent for the period under review.

Likewise, Adex's recently released data found key sub-sectors of non-traditional exports such as clothing and chemicals posted a growth of 477.7 percent and 79.7 percent, respectively, in the stretch ended May.

On the other hand, traditional exports from the Andean nation to India sink by 77.2 percent due to lower shipments of copper and gold.

Peruvian exports to India’s 547-million people market totaled US$ 592.7 million in 2013, which is up a stunning 53.3 percent compared to a year earlier.
