Peru's President-elect Pedro Pablo Kuczynski reaffirmed on Monday afternoon his position in favor of placing elderly prisoners under house arrest.

In remarks to the press, the 77-year-old explained an existing court sentence orders former President Alberto Fujimori to comply with the judgment.

As is known, jailed Fujimori submitted a request for a presidential pardon last Friday. He has been imprisoned since 2007 for crimes committed during his 1990-2000 term.

"What I'm willing to do is to allow him to serve sentence under more pleasant conditions, at home, as other elderly prisoners tackling same health issues," the economist underlined.

As future President of Peru, Kuczynski emphasized his signature will be only given once the Congress approves a law that puts elderly prisoners under house arrest.

"That’s the limit. No more,” he told reporters waiting outside his Lima office.

However, the former Minister strongly ruled out this regulation might benefit those imprisoned for terrorist crimes.
