Peruvian coffee exports exceeded US$132 million, from January to February this year, 66% higher than the figure in the same period last year (US$79.8 million), according to Sierra y Selva Exportadora, an institution attached to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

According to preliminary figures from the National Superintendence of Tax Administration (Sunat), this amount was attributable to the shipment of 38,760 tons to the United States, Belgium, Germany, Canada, Sweden, and the Netherlands, as the main destination markets, covering more than 65% of the total exported volume and generating an increase of 23% in the first two months, compared to the last four years.

In January and February, the United States was the main market for Peruvian coffee, which acquired a total of 7,558 tons of the grain for a value of US$27.5 million.

Likewise, the case of Belgium stands out, with a participation of 19%. In the same period, it purchased 7,425 tons valued at US$27.6 million, which represents an increase of 3.9% in volume and of 2.9% in value compared to 2023.

2023 was a year of challenges for the Peruvian coffee industry, due to the increase in temperature and lack of rain, which contributed to the spread of yellow rust.

These conditions impacted the production and quality of coffee, mainly in the central jungle (Huanuco, Junin, and Ucayali regions), according to Midagri's Commodities Observatory.

Despite these difficulties, Peru managed to export 205,000 tons of coffee beans for a total value of US$827.3 million, with peak shipments of more than 32,000 tons per month during the last four months of the year.

In Peru, coffee is grown in San Martin, Cajamarca, Amazonas, Piura, Junin, Pasco, Huanuco, Ucayali, Apurimac, Cusco, Lambayeque, Ayacucho, and Puno regions; covering 427,000 hectares with the participation of around 223,000 families.
