Peru’s 2013 budget proposal places top priority on national security and defense reflecting the citizens’ growing demand for a more efficient decision-making to counter the growing threat of crime, reported Sunday a legislative source.
Josue Gutierrez, chairman of the Budget Committee of the Peruvian Congress, said the 2013 budget proposal ensures financing for a new remuneration scale for the Peruvian armed forces and police as well as improved logistics to tackle organized crime.

The budget proposal includes PEN1.3 billion (US$ 501 million) to implement a new remunerative and pension regime for the military and police.

Gutierrez said Peru’s Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano will attend Peru's Congress on Monday to support 2013 budget proposal, as well as Prime Minister Juan Jimenez Mayor and Finance Minister Luis Miguel Castilla.

He stated 2013 budget proposal has increased by five times the resources for military intelligence, and added resources to purchase and refurbish weapons to fight narco-terrorism.

Gutierrez recalled part from the budget would earmark S/. 120 million (US$ 46.3 millions) to acquire smart police patrol cars, S/. 93 million (US$ 35.9 millions) to equipped helicopters and S/. 30 million (US$ 11.5 millions) for riot control (body armor and riot control equipment) and police safety.
