As part of efforts to open up more markets with the purpose of further boosting exports, Peru continues FTA negotiations and arrangements with Australia, Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Edgar Vasquez affirmed.

During an interview with El Peruano official gazette, the government official projected the accord would likely enter into force next year, thus becoming Peru's 22nd FTA.

"The first round of Peru-Australia FTA negotiations took place in early July and was highly productive," the Deputy Minister said highlighting the countries' prior experience during Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) talks.

"The second round is coming; it is slated for end-August in Australia, and we expect more than significant progress," he anticipated.

While unable to estimate an exact date, Vasquez voiced hopes to seal the bilateral FTA soon and have it in force by 2018.

"We intend to have swift negotiations, which will be possible since we are complementary partners that share an open-market stance," he explained.

Peru-India FTA

On the other hand, the economist addressed coming FTA negotiations between Peru and India, set to start next month in New Delhi.

"An FTA with that country will be important for Peru's agricultural industry, but also for certain niches in textile and garments, metal-mechanic, as well as chemistry and plastic sectors."

In addition to goods, Peru will also negotiate services, investments and movement of people.

Lastly, the official underlined the Inca country will be the first Latin American economy to begin FTA talks with India, which has only entered into partial scope agreements covering some products with Chile and the Mercosur trade bloc.
