Peru has won a continental medal in synchronized swimming after 17 years, thanks to Thais Yamashiro’s performance, who claimed bronze in junior solo at the 2015 South American Junior Championships held in Lima.

Thais, 14, performed her routine to the sound of tango, and was applauded by the audience at the end of her presentation. Judges gave her 129.47 points.

This is the first time in 17 years Peru captures an award at a tournament of this magnitude; the last time was at the 1998 South American Junior Champs held in Vitoria, Brazil, where Laura Baglietto took bronze in the same category.

Still pretty excited, Thais said this is the result of the tough daily training.

“The team’s goal was to get third place and better the fifth spot from previous South American tournament in Valparaiso. I share this medal with my colleagues, family and trainer Jeanina Amayo,” she said.

The gold medal of this year was grabbed by Brazilian Laura Souza with 137.56 points, and Colombian Laura Londono earned the silver with 132.40 points.

On the other hand, Peruvian duets by Maria Paula Castillo and Cielomar Romero, as well as Carla Morales and Karen Rolando got seventh and tenth place with 132.3692 and 131.5939, respectively.
