Peruvian Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio on Thursday granted the first temporary-stay permits to Venezuelan citizens, who decided to regularize their immigration status in the Inca nation.

Said citizens will now be allowed to study, work, have access to health services and pay taxes under Peruvian law.

The permits set the necessary mechanisms to facilitate the regularization of Venezuelans' immigration status in Peru, thus reciprocating Venezuela's measures in favor of Peruvians who emigrated decades ago, the official explained.

"Years ago, you opened your doors to us Peruvians, so we had a place to work. It is not merely a matter of reciprocity, it is a sign of brotherhood," he said.

In this respect, Basombrio stressed Peru extends a warm welcome to Venezuelans, who currently endure many hardships in their homeland.

Temporary stay permits

Temporary stay permits are issued by the National Superintendence of Migrations. The documents target Venezuelan citizens, as well as other foreign citizens who are parents to underage Peruvian children or Peruvian children of legal age with disabilities.

Permits are issued to the said foreign citizens, for one year, as long as they legally enter the country and meet requirements established, such as having no criminal records.
