The National University of Engineering (UNI)’s Information and Communications Technology Center (CTIC) was reopened with the implementation of state-of-the-art equipment to promote research efforts in the said center.

The ceremony was led by a delegation from the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

South Korean Ambassador to Lima Keun Ho Jang referred to the donation of 260 state-of-the-art computers, video surveillance cameras, scanners, projectors, among other equipment set up last July by Korean experts, as part of the broad bilateral agenda covering Peru’s educational quality.

“UNI represents an axis of cooperation where we expect the donated equipment to contribute to students and professors having greater access to education and ICTs (Information and Communications Technology),” the diplomat said.

Under the signing of the agreement, university President Jorge Alva Hurtado highlighted the Korean community’s gesture to contribute to Peru’s mastering of advanced technologies.

"This re-equipment phase compels us to improve the ongoing training services aimed at students, professors and administrative staff of the university community," he acknowledged.

On the other hand, UNI’s CTIC director Alonso Tenorio Trigoso, emphasized the importance of the País (Country) document associated with the Non-refundable International Cooperation Program executed by the Korean government in Peru.
With an investment of over US$7.00 million, the program enables the execution of health, public administration, technology and environmental projects.

"This important donation amounting to over US$306,000 will allow UNI’s CTIC to promote research in new information and communications technologies (ICTs) in 8 research lines or laboratories," Trigoso observed.

KOICA’s director, Daehwan Kim, director-general for economic affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Javier Paulinich Velarde, among other authorities, also attended the center’s reopening ceremony.

On other matters, with the renewal of CTIC’s technological equipment set after nine years, UNI’s different Student Centers will benefit from part of the equipment from a previous donation in 2007.

Under the direction of Alonso Tenorio Trigoso, UNI’s CTIC has implemented diverse research groups and laboratories since 2015, such as Internet, Cloud Computing, Smart Machine, Precision Agriculture, Scientific Computing, HPC & Big Data, among others.

These laboratories’ projects include the creation of an electronic shackle prototype to reduce gender violence indices, a mining robot and helmet to prevent workplace accidents, as well as the Drone Cansat, a low-cost satellite that registers data programed into it.

This last project earned one of the researchers a scholarship for NASA.

It should be noted that UNI president Jorge Alva Hurtado’s current administration has been promoting the support of scientific and technological subjects, as well as agreements and conventions with a range of public institutions to conduct applied research.
