Peru's government seeks to position the country as a hub for sustainable tourism hand-in-hand with biotrade, generating partnerships and competitiveness in the value chain, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has reported.
Mincetur's head, Magali Silva, pointed out the Ollanta Humala administration seeks to promote value-added exports which could change people's lives, in particular, of those living in the Peruvian inner regions by making biotrade an inclusive tool.

"Biotrade should be handled on the basis of a value chain approach, which is a partnership among producers, processors, distributors, traders and support institutions and regulations," Silva said.

The minister made these remarks while presiding over the Monday's opening of an international forum and business roundtable "Biotrade, sustainable business model and social inclusion."

The conference is aimed at reporting on the biotrade projects' achievements, market opportunities in the medium and long rum as well as the development of native biodiversity products.

"If we don't take care of our biological mega diversity and if we do not make it profitable, we run the risk of losing it. Peru is a country with rich biodiversity, a condition which places it in a privileged position in international markets," she noted.

Likewise, Silva recalled Peru will host the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) twentieth session of the Conference of Parties (COP 20) from December 3-14, 2014.

Biotrade refers to those activities of collection, production, transformation, and commercialization of goods and services derived from native biodiversity under the criteria of environmental, social and economic sustainability.
