United States Agency for International Development (USAID) plans to provide US$50 million in development assistance for Peru this year.
"USAID has a US$50 million program to help Peru this year. This will support the efforts being made by President Ollanta Humala, regional and local governments on development," said Deborah Kennedy, USAID's Acting Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Kennedy noted that this support is aimed at promoting development in areas where coca was cultivated, and issues related to environment, climate change, governance, health, education, among others.
She stressed that Peru has eradicated 14,000 hectares of illegal coca crops last year and said that the Peruvian government is now more committed in the fight against drug trafficking.
"We are very pleased with the efforts made by the government, which set and exceeded its goal last year, there are more ambitious goals in 2013 and the United States is willing to support this goal," she said.
