14:56 | Lima, May. 23.

Lima will host the XXXVII Assembly of Delegates of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) which, from May 24th to 25th, will discuss women and gender equity issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Scheduled activities include the approval of the Strategic Plan 2016-2021 and the Triennial Plan 2016-2019, as well as the signing of the Lima Declaration — the official document containing the main agreements and commitments, achieved by States, regarding women's rights and gender equality for the following years.

Several delegations will arrive in Lima starting on Monday. The groups will comprise state ministers and high-level authorities responsible for gender issues from 34 member states of the Organization of American States.

The event is expected to feature OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro Lemes and CIM Executive Secretary Carmen Moreno.

Divided into several thematic panels, the gathering will address topics such as autonomy and equality in the exercise of women’s economic rights.

According to the International labor Organization (ECLAC) more than 100 million women in Latin America are in the labor force. Women’s participation in the labor market has increased by 35% since 1990, which is an important social and economic transformation.

A World Bank report states that poverty in the region would have been 28% higher if this increase had not occurred.

Delegations will start to arrive in Peru's nation capital on Monday.
