Peru is on the way to close most of the infrastructure gap with a US$113 billion portfolio of projects financed jointly by the central government and regional and local governments, in partnership with the private sector.

Announcement was made by Jose Carlos Lumbreras, Project Development Manager of the publication The Top 10,000 Companies, who said such deficit grew to US$121 billion as at March this year.

“The implementation of these investment plans will reduce the infrastructure gap by over 93%, which will contribute, without a doubt, to the strengthening and growth of regional economies, taking into consideration that 85% of these projects will be implemented out of Lima,” he told El Peruano official daily.

This is one of the main conclusions of the study “Infrastructure Projects in Peru 2015-2017,” which consolidates the available portfolio of infrastructure projects through different investment mechanisms.

Nevertheless, Lumbreras argued that only 10% of the 2,083 projects have been awarded.

“Most of these plans are stuck in municipalities and regional governments, more than in the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF),” he said.

In this case he suggested that each study includes more technicians, so that project assessments are completed in less time.

According to the study, the Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversion) could award most of the 22 Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), prioritized by MEF and other ministries, worth US$6.9 billion this year.
