State-run Trabaja Peru (Work, Peru) program will create at least 12,000 temporary jobs aimed at the reconstruction and rehabilitation of areas affected by heavy rains and landslides.

As is known, the Inca nation has been at the mercy of several landslides over recent weeks, as result of downpours overflowing rivers in different regions.

On this occasion, Trabaja Peru is a social program designed to generate jobs and promote the development of infrastructure projects in areas hit by natural disaster.

In this sense, the government will allocate S/40 million (around US$12.25 million) for the execution of 200 projects nationwide.

These new positions will be linked to rehabilitation of irrigation channels, roads, drains, sewage systems, ditches, as well as to debris-removal operations. 72% of jobs will favor female citizens.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski highlighted a considerable part of works are aimed at preventing disasters.

Likewise, the Head of State stressed the need to eliminate bureaucracy and corruption, in order to execute the projects the country demands.

Areas affected —and currently in state of emergency— are: Loreto, Cajamarca, Tumbes, Lambayeque, Piura, La Libertad, Ancash, Huancavelica, Ica and Arequipa regions, as well as some Lima provinces.

"The willingness to work exists, and now we have to organize ourselves properly [...]," he said at the launching of Trabaja Peru program. The ceremony took place on Monday morning at Lima-based Government Palace.

At the site, Mr. Kuczynski was joined by Labor and Employment Promotion Minister Alfonso Grados, as well as Trabaja Peru Head Cesar Galvez.
