Peru has been appointed to the vice-presidency of the International Labour Organization's (ILO) Governing Body for the 2017-18 period, Labor and Employment Promotion Minister Alfonso Grados informed on Monday.

The role is to fall under H.E. Luis Enrique Chavez Basagoitia, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Peru to the International Organizations in Geneva, who was elected as Government Vice-chairperson.

Announcement came following the Inca nation's recent election as regular member to ILO's executive body for the 2017-20 period.

"Both events [designations] show our particular interest in promoting the development of a labor policy that prioritizes labor formalization, ongoing social dialogue, as well as the promotion of employability among youth and vulnerable groups […]," Minister Grados said.

The government official recently participated in the 106th Session of the International Labour Conference held in Geneva (Switzerland).

The Inca nation thus became part of ILO's executive body, which meets three times a year to decide on ILO policy and the agenda of the International Labour Conference.

The Governing Body also adopts the draft Programme and Budget of the Organization for submission to the Conference, and elects the Director-General.
