Peru’s Education Minister Jaime Saavedra on Wednesday announced his portfolio will carry out a reshuffle in the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD).

Speaking before Congress, the minister also disclosed the establishment of minimal requirements to improve management capacity at sports federations.

Saavedra claimed his portfolio acted with due diligence in light of irregularities involving the Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP) and initiated judicial actions against those involved.

He reiterated the sector’s efforts to increase the education budget and quality of teaching.

The government official admits that even though students’ assessment results have started to improve at a rapid pace, “we cannot be over-confident, as we still have a long way to go.”

The education sector has witnessed advances, he said, although they pale in comparison to the challenge of meeting high academic standards.

He mentioned the education reform started a few years ago, and stressed previous administrations’ efforts to lay the foundations in favor of education.

Remarks were made during an interpellation session at the Congress headquarters.
