Peru: Southern regions exports up 21.9% in 2016

Total exports from Peru's Southern Macro Region increased by 21.9% in 2016, thus totaling US$8.398 billion, Perucamaras' Business Research Center (CIE) reported.

It should be noted Perucamaras means private-run National Chamber of Commerce, Production and Services.

On the other hand, the Southern Macro Region is composed of Arequipa, Cusco, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, Puno and Tacna.

Results

Growth was mainly underpinned by the positive performance of the traditional sector, above all that of mining industry.

Traditional exports amounted to US$7.714 billion, up by 25.4% from the previous year. In this sense, corresponding products accounted for 91.9% of total shipments from the said bloc.

The mining sector accounted for 91% of total exports value, standing at US$7.640 billion (up by 26.1%).

Copper minerals and gold exports represented 61.4% (US$4.734 billion) and 33.1% (US$2.553 billion) of total traditional shipments, respectively. 

Non-traditional

On the other hand, non-traditional exports stood at US$684.3 million in 2016, thus decreasing by 7%.

Markets

China led the ranking by receiving 31.8% of total shipments, followed by the United States (13.8%), Switzerland (10.4%) and Japan (7.3%).
