Thanks to 137 votes, Peru was reelected as an International Maritime Organization (IMO) member.

The decision was made during the organization's assembly taking place in London since November 23th, Peru’s Foreign Affairs Ministry informed.

Chile, the Bahamas, Mexico and Jamaica were also reelected thanks to 126 votes, 124 votes, 122 votes and 110 votes, respectively.

Thus, the international community recognizes Peruvian contribution to IMO efforts designed to provide effectiveness, safety, as well as protection to trade, the Ministry added.

IMO, a UN specialized organization, is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.

It aims to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair, effective, as well as universally-adopted and implemented.

It must be noted international shipping transports about 90% of global trade to peoples and communities all over the world.
