Water and sanitation works, as well as housing and infrastructure projects, constitute a "major step towards a modern Peru," President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski highlighted on Thursday.

"Our government will focus on water, housing and infrastructure because you cannot have health without water," the statesman said as he supervised water and sewerage works in Huarochiri province's San Antonio district.

Aimed at improving the life quality of 71,420 locals, the connections constitute a 20-year-awaited landmark venture to benefit Lima's remote areas.

"As you can see, it is an inhospitable area […]. This is why Sedapal [State-owned Water Utility] cannot cater for over one million Peruvians: the difficulty to reach their settlements," he explained.

The Head of State also stressed the need to promote the housing sector and assured the government currently relies on a plan that is "much more dynamic than in previous years."

On the other hand, the top official took the opportunity to share the benefits of the Barranca-Ica commuter train, another project underway.

In this respect, he said it will "open up flat areas in Lima Metropolitan Area, thus facilitating the development of infrastructure needed."

Likewise, he addressed upcoming water cleaning works in the province.

"The Huaycoloro River is nearby [...]. We are going to clean it up to create a healthy environment. The lack of clean water leads to diseases like anemia, diarrhea, and many other things we want to prevent," he added.

Huarochiri's water and sanitation works required an investment of S/368,924,098 (about US$110.09 million), and include the expansion of 14,456 drinking water and 14,761 sewerage connections.

The initiative will contribute to improving towns' living conditions, providing locals with water supply to enhance their life quality and health care at lower rates.

The Head of State was joined by Housing, Construction and Sanitation Minister Edmer Trujillo and State-owned Water Utility (Sedapal) Chairman Rudecindo Vega.
