Peruvian President Ollanta Humala paid a technical visit to Las Bambas mining project on Tuesday.

This copper megaproject —run by MMG Limited mining company— is located in the Andean Apurimac region at a height of over 4,000 meters above sea level.

Las Bambas —which entailed an investment worth US$10.00 billion— will become one of the planet's five largest mines, once it reaches its highest production level.

Likewise, the project will enable to place Peru as the world's second major copper producer after Chile. It will also add one percentage point to GDP expansion in 2016.

Las Bambas will produce between 250,000 and 300,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate during the current year. It is expected to produce approximately 400,000 tonnes in 2017.

The official activity took place in Cotabambas province, Apurimac region.
