President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Friday requested mayors to work transparently and united while stressing Peru currently fights corruption in local and regional governments.

At the meeting with Amazon Mayors, the statesman said "working transparently" denotes hiring high-level professionals and paying them fair salaries for their services.

"We must work united. There is currently a fight against corruption in Peru, there are imprisoned governors […]," the President expressed.

"Thus, we must work transparently," he added.

The statesman attended the 1st Meeting of Amazon Mayors, featuring State Ministers, as well as more than 200 district and province Mayors from Amazonian regions: Loreto, Amazonas, Madre de Dios, San Martin and Ucayali.

The activity was aimed at creating a space for dialogue between Ministers and local authorities to learn about Amazon towns' main demands, as well as to enable projects execution and improve local government management.

In addition, the meeting sought to upgrade the quality of citizen services and strengthen mayors' work regarding public policies and territorial development.

The event was also attended by Ministers Fernando Zavala (Prime), Alfredo Thorne (Economy and Finance), Marilu Martens (Education), Edmer Trujillo (Housing, Construction and Sanitation), among others.
