Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said the humanitarian pardon to ex-President Alberto Fujimori was granted in compliance with a prerogative given by the Constitution.
"I am convinced that those who identify as democratic should not let Alberto Fujimori die in prison because justice is not revenge," the President said.
In his address to the nation on Monday night, Mr. Kuczynski said all
pardons are by nature controversial and that his decision has been "complex and difficult."
"This might be the most difficult decision of my life. It's about the health and life chances of a former President of Peru who, having committed excesses and very serious mistakes, was sentenced and has already served 12 years of conviction," he added.
Peru's top official explained that open wounds can only be healed with reconciliation efforts and everyone's willingness.
"We have to be persistent to lead our country in a fraternal bicentennial celebration, full of peace and prosperity," he stated.
The Peruvian leader also called on youth to turn the page and not to let negative emotions —that might stall the country's development— rule their heads.
As is known, President Kuczynski —using his constitutional powers—
granted a humanitarian pardon to ex-President Fujimori, as well as seven other people in similar condition.
The announcement was made through an official statement on Sunday evening.
The decision clears Mr. Fujimori of convictions for human rights crimes before completion of a 25-year prison sentence.
