Peru’s President Ollanta Humala inaugurated the Paris Climate Change Conference (COP21) Leaders Event urging world’s leaders to adopt “the largest alliance in history” to face climate change consequences.

“We have the obligation to reach this equitable, ambitious, balanced and operational agreement the world urgently needs […]. The challenge is to allow each one to contribute responsibly and effectively,” the President told attendees at the conference opening session.

In order for the Paris agreement to play a “transforming role” in economies, societies and world’s institutions, its implementation must go hand-in-hand with the 2013 Agenda and the new sustainable development goals (SDG). Thus, it will be compatible with efforts to ensure sustainability, growth and poverty elimination.

In this sense, he underlined a non-precedent global climate action has been moved forward since last year's Lima COP20.

“As you know, Peru has held the COP20 Presidency, and feels deeply honored for the trust placed by the international community to lead this process, post which has been handed over to France,” he affirmed.

Likewise, the President underlined Peru is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by the year 2030. As an example, he mentioned the recent “Sierra del Divisor” National Park creation, which hosts Peru’s largest biodiversity.

Finally, he affirmed the COP21 agreement must contain terms, granting flexibility to developing countries and progressive mitigation measures.

Likewise, he said the agreement must include commitments to boost climate financing and technology transfer.
