Cerro Verde mine expansion proves it is possible to ensure national mining development while respecting the environment, Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano announced on Monday.

"Cerro Verde expansion proves that proper mining activities can be developed in Peru, when complying with legislation and environmental regulations, as well as generating wealth," Cateriano affirmed.

It must be noted such project entailed an investment worth US$ 5 billion, which will significantly invigorate the national economy.

"Over recent years, a political message has been constantly emphasized by stating that mining was not possible, since it clashes with the environment. Today, this project proves the opposite, that eco-friendly mining development is possible in Peru, while respecting the environment," the official stressed.

On the other hand, the President of the Council of Ministers stressed that Cerro Verde is among the world's five largest mining projects.

"Indeed, Arequipa's pride has a lot to do with this [success], as well as international cooperation and the commitment made by investors, who came to bet on Peru [...]," the Prime Minister stated.

He went on to add Freeport McMoRan CEO Richard Adkerson committed to sharing Cerro Verde benefits with Arequipa and Peru, while complying with regulations and respecting the environment.
