Peru and other countries sharing the Amazon River Basin have come together to formally oppose Amazon's plan to register the .amazon domain name.
The Amazonian countries lodged formal complaints at the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Beijing, China.

Peru's Foreign Ministry said that "Peru, Brazil and other countries in the region agreed to prevent the use of this domain for purposes of public interest related to the protection, promotion and awareness raising on issues related to the Amazon biome."

ICANN said it will now send Amazon.com an “early warning” through which it will ask for the firm’s reasons for applying for the sought after .amazon domain name.

ICANN is a non-profit organization that oversees the assignment of new web addresses.
