Pichanaki City Councilman, Feliciano Egoavil, told Andina news agency the municipal authorities support the march for peace, which intends to prove “we are peaceful people.”

Some 130 native communities have confirmed their participation in the town's gathering.

Among participants will be: The Regional Association of the Indigenous Peoples of the Central Rainforest (ARPISC); municipal and regional authorities; Pichanaki farmers and members of the Armed Forces.

Egoavil mentioned peace was restored, since the Pluspetrol withdrawal from the site was announced.

The Argentinian oil and gas company was requested to leave from the area, at which it was carrying out works for exploration.

The request was made by the former Minister of Energy and Mines, Eleodoro Mayorga.

After the decision was taken, “there is no such fear anymore.”

“The population feared the negative experiences, caused by that enterprise in other parts of the nation, could repeat,” Egoavil admitted.

Nonetheless, according to the municipal authority, it has been “proved the protest was promoted by people not connected to Pichanaki, who were only trying to benefit themselves.”

The march intends to disperse the violent acts that occurred weeks ago due to violent protests against Argentinian company, which led one person dead and several others wounded.

Currently members of the Executive Power have engaged in dialogue with the community leaders as well, in order to reach development in the area.
