Peru mayors seek new world markets for regional producers

Peru's Productive Mayors —representing Huanuco, Piura, Puno and San Martin regions— started the search for world's markets, with the purpose of implementing productive projects that will benefit their communities' organized producers.

The burgomasters participated in the Market Research Mission to Germany and the Netherlands through the first Accelerated Market Program (AMP), organized by State-run Sierra y Selva Exportadora (Exporting Andes and Jungle) program.

During the first day of AMP —which kicked off on February 15 in Munich (Germany)— mayors took part in a seminar on the functioning of the European market, as well as its main actors and trends.

Chaired by the international consulting organization specialized in sustainability and European markets (Insiders), said seminar was held at the Cervantes Institute of Munich.

Likewise, mayors attended Biofach 2017 —the world's leading trade fair for Organic Food— that took place in Nuremberg (Germany) on February 15-18.

At the site, they identified business opportunities, in favor of their communities, mainly linked to organic and vegan products.

In addition, officials participated in the international gathering of the Small Producers' Symbol (SPP), an alternative to other certifications that recognize large groups of producers.

It must be noted Peruvians were asked to become members of the guild. Being an SPP member means working for fair prices to benefit organized small producers.

Furthermore, mayors seek to be part of IFOAM-Organics International, an international umbrella organization from the organic world designed to unite a broad range of stakeholders.

Said organization represents about 800 affiliates in 117 countries.

Peruvian coffee profiles

The authorities also met with main coffee importers from the Port of Hamburg and gave them coffee samples (green beans) from various cooperatives based in Peruvian regions.

In this sense, the "Cup Tasting" session served to obtain organoleptic profiles of the special coffees brought by mayors.

Held at the Tostaduria Espressone's facilities (Cadolzburg Municipality), the activity saw the presence of Gregor Dattner, the Barista Champion from Germany.
