Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros on Tuesday reaffirmed Peru's interest in hosting the start of the Dakar Rally 2018.

Remarks came after the Peruvian Government's official bid to host the major driving event once again.

If chosen, the Inca nation hopes to see a US$300-million economic boost, the official noted.

"Peru has ratified its interest in hosting Dakar 2018. A multisectorial commission has been set up in advance to this end, since this international race begins next January," he said.

In this respect, organizers have also expressed their interest in featuring Peru in next year's route.

"The idea is to make Peru the Grand Start of Dakar 2018," the Tourism head pointed out.

Back in 2013, Peru's hosting of the said start entailed a US$6-million investment. "For 2018, we project investments similar to those recorded in previous years."

Benefits

On the other hand, the country expects to yield benefits that will far surpass estimated investments.

"We expect a US$300-million boost for the tourism industry, mainly in accommodation, food and transportation," Ferreyros detailed.

And this does not include the major national and international media reach, set to help promote Peru's image as tourist destination.

For Dakar 2018, 1,200 hours of coverage will be aired in 190 countries.

"Asian countries account for 40% [of the audience], which is in line with [the Tourism] Ministry's aim to attract tourists from that market," the Minister underlined.

The Dakar Rally 2018 will gather 750 competitors, 40 of whom will represent the Inca nation.
