Peru's next administration will inherit infrastructure projects currently under execution —such as Lima Metro Line 2 and the Southern Peruvian Gas Pipeline— along with a mining sector going through an upward process, Peru's Finance Minister Alonso Segura affirmed.

Segura stressed that these infrastructure projects will serve as an additional growth engine during the following years and complement mining sector’s development.

Government's legacy, a development engine

The upcoming administration will inherit not only a competitive mining sector, but also a greater number of infrastructure projects expected to become an additional growth engine, the official indicated.

In this sense, Segura estimated the mining industry will boost national economy thru 2018.

It must be noted the mining sector is expected to expand by over 12% in 2016, according to projections by the Finance Ministry and the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy.

Likewise, Segura emphasized that Peru remains a competitive investment destination, despite decline in commodity prices.

Status

"We have to take into account that Peruvian economy is doing better than expected. We are doing better compared to other regional countries [...]," he highlighted.

"Peru is surprising despite the unfavorable international economic environment [...], and we have to continue working day after day," the minister stated.

Thanks to recent economic growth reached, business confidence will also improve throughout this year, he noted.
