Peru: Digital payments per capita increased five-fold over past three years

15:39 | Lima, Apr. 25.

The Central Reserve Bank (BCR) on Thursday indicated that digital retail payments (by electronic wallets, transfers, credit, and debit cards) have increased fivefold in Peru over recent years, proving rapid development.

"Around 55 digital payments per person were registered in 2020 and 266 were registered in 2023," BCR General Manager Paul Castillo indicated.

"This has a lot to do with the effort by financial entities to get closer to users, improve the user experience, and provide high-quality service," he added.

During the Ica 2024 International Microfinance Seminar (SIM), Castillo affirmed that the BCR has been supporting this effort (digital retail payments) with regulation on the interoperability of e-wallets (Yape, Plin, Bim, among others).

"We think that this is essential to favor financial inclusion. Digital payments constitute the first channel through which a non-banked user can receive a financial service," Castillo underscored.

"Digitalizing is not enough; although it is not synonymous with financial inclusion, it is the first step because it opens up the possibility for the financial system to reach out to more users," he added.

The BCR official reminded attendees of the work being carried out by the Peruvian State to promote digitalization and financial inclusion in Peru.

"We engage in this effort in coordination with the Superintendence of Banking, Insurance, and Pension Fund Administrators (SBS) to make Peru advance in international ratios on digitalization and financial inclusion," he indicated.

The Peruvian Federation of Municipal Savings and Credit Banks (FEPCMAC) is the organizer of the International Microfinance Seminar (SIM) "Toward greater inclusion: Microfinance Trends," which began on April 24 and will run until April 26 in the southern city of Ica.
