Peru declares three-day national mourning upon Chavez’ death

The Peruvian government has declared a three-day national mourning, starting Thursday, following the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias.

The Peruvian national flag shall be flown at half staff at the Government Palace and in all public institutions in solidarity with the people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, reads a supreme ordinance.

Periods of mourning have also been declared in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Uruguay, and the Dominican Republic.

The supreme ordinance published today in the official gazzete El Peruano was signed by President Ollanta Humala and Prime Minister Juan Jimenez.

President Humala is scheduled to travel to Caracas on Thursday to attend President Chavez's funeral tomorrow.
