Alto Mayo Forest Multiple Services Cooperative (Coopbam) became the first Peruvian guild to export a container filled with organic-coffee to Germany, State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) affirmed.
The said product —harvested in San Martin region’s Alto Mayo Protected Forest— was acquired by NAF Trading, a Danish enterprise relying on an over-90-year coffee trading experience.
The said grains were shipped to Hamburg (Germany).
"We are very happy about this shipment; at the same time, we have great expectations about what may happen in the future. [Cooperative] members feel excited, hoping this will change our lifestyles," Coopbam Chairman Eli Vargas expressed.
Perseverance of 68 farmers -who have not only managed to properly organize themselves in less than a year- led to results.
This first experience reflects advantages of sustainably benefitting from protected areas' natural resources, as well as alliances composed of farmers, State organizations and private enterprises working towards a common goal: fairly-priced coffee based on environmental and social good practices.
